Dr. Tobe Banc is a board-certified internist and geriatrician. As the newly appointed Medical Director of the Northwell Aging Institute she will support and guide the system-wide clinical strategy for healthy aging, aiming to improve outcomes, enhance patient care, support our caregivers and improve the provider experience. In addition, she will lead the implementation of age-friendly models of care. Dr. Banc has a distinguished record of accomplishments at Northwell, including a 21-year tenure at Phelps Hospital, most recently serving as the chief medical officer.
Throughout her time at Phelps, she was instrumental in founding the Family Medicine Residency Program, as well as growing a multidisciplinary geriatrics and palliative care service. In addition, Dr. Banc advocated for, and helped open, a caregiver center while also spearheading multiple quality initiatives focused on enhancing patient safety and reducing readmissions, excess days, and hospital-acquired infections. Prior to joining Phelps, Dr. Banc served as the co-director of the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center at the Bronx VA Medical Center, where she helped lead one of the first multidisciplinary palliative care fellowship programs and co-wrote the curriculum.
Her educational background includes a fellowship in geriatrics at The Mount Sinai Medical Center, a residency at the University of Connecticut, and a medical degree from New York University School of Medicine. She holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Geriatrics from the American Board of Internal Medicine and has completed numerous leadership and palliative care training programs.
